“Well-behaved women seldom make history” – An evening with Golda Meir and Sophie Tucker
Do Laurel Thatcher Ulrich’s words which became a bumper sticker apply to a Prime Minister of Israel or the “last of the red-hot mamas”? Both of these Jewish Women, Golda Meir and Sophie Tucker certainly made history and neither of these iconic women could be classified as “well-behaved” in knowing their place as women in a male dominated society!
Golda Meir (May 3,1898 – December 8, 1978) served her adopted country as Prime Minister from March 1969 through 1974. Sophie Tucker (January 13, 1886 – February 9, 1966) thrilled international audiences with her then unique almost regal and at times suggestive singing such signature songs as Some of these days” and “Yiddishe Mama.” Among the songs that she discovered and established are “when the When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob-Bob Bobbin’ Along”, “The lady is a tramp” “Hard Hearted Hannah”, “After You’ve Gone”
Come spend an evening as we hear the words and voices of these two women whose lives shed light on two different vantage points of Jewish life and achievement of this past century.
